Auditor-General Pursues 2 MPs Over Ksh2.5 Million World Cup Trip Cash

Auditor-General Edward Ouko has turned his guns towards two members of the National Assembly over the controversial awarding of Ksh2.5 million 2018 World Cup trip money.

The unnamed MPs received the money in order to cater for the expenses of the delegates for the last two weeks of the World Cup matches held in Russia.

In the report tabled in Parliament, Ouko wants the Ministry of Sports to compel the two legislators to refund the money which he claimed was paid to them.

He explained that the lawmakers requested for the funds irregularly and that there was proof the money was sent to the National Sports Fund.

He further elaborated that the payout was made after a request from the Clerk of the National Assembly through letters dated June 14 and June 18, 2018.

A delegation of 20 MPs who attended the World Cup fully sponsored by taxpayers money caused public uproar in July 2018.

Part of the delegation that travelled to Russia, according to The Star, included Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town), Wafula Wamunyinyi ( Kanduyi), Sylvanus Maritim (Ainamoi) and Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town).

Senators who attended the most-watched soccer event included Cleophas Malala ( Kakamega), Aaron Cheruyiot (Kericho) and Judy Pareno (Nominated).

The uproar forced Parliamentary Speaker Justin Muturi to step in, at the time, and defend the choice to send the MPs to the event.

Muturi termed the trip as a "benchmarking exercise by members of the parliamentary Sports and Culture Committee and Bunge FC - the parliament football team.
