Tremor Cracks Open Busy Naivasha-Mai Mahiu Highway

The tremor that rocked parts of Kenya on Sunday evening did not come without destruction.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) reported that a section of the Naivasha - Mai Mahiu road has developed cracks.

The bridge is at Fai Amario area which is about eight kilometers from Naivasha town.

"Following the earth tremors experienced in several parts of the country, KeNHA advises that a fault has been cited along the Naivasha - Mai Mahiu Road, at Fay Amario, about 8km from Naivasha, Mai Mahiu bound," read the statement from KeNHA.

Traffic Commandant told journalists that officers had been deployed to redirect traffic flow.

KeNHA also stated that it has dispatched engineers to monitor any resultant damages to the road surface.

Private vehicle operators were advised to use the main Kamandura - Limuru - Kinungi - Naivasha Highway.

Heavy commercial vehicles operators were urged to exercise caution and restraint as well as follow traffic flow directions that are being provided by the police.

This is not the first time earth movements have affected the Mai Mahiu region

In 2018, a large crack, stretching several kilometres developed on the Narok - Mai Mahiu road, which geologists claimed was a result of a slow separation of the Somali plate from the rest of Africa.
