Naim Bilal Appointed as New KBC Managing Director

Veteran journalist, Dr Naim Bilal has been appointed as the new managing director of the State broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) after an 18 month wait.

Information Communication and Technology Cabinet Secretary (CS), Joe Mucheru, announced the new appointment via a gazette notice.

“The CS appoints Naim Bilal to be the Managing Director of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation for a period of three years,” stated an excerpt of the notice.

According to the Gazette notice, Mr Bilal’s tenure began on March 20, 2019.

Mr Bilal previously served as the senior editor at Nation Media Group as well as at the Judiciary, where he was the Director of Communications.

Prior to his appointment, the seasoned journalist had been serving as the director of information in the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT).

The top post had remained vacant for a period of 18 months following the exit of Waithaka Waihenya in 2017.

Paul Jilani had been serving as the head of the state broadcaster in a temporary capacity.

KBC has been in the spotlight on numerous occasions for all the wrong reasons, with allegations of embezzlement as well as employee sit-downs over poor working conditions.
