SOTN 2019: Uhuru Responds to MPs Slamming Handshake Deal

While delivering the State of The Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, President Uhuru Kenyatta dispelled the notion peddled by several MPs that the handshake deal was not beneficial to the government.

The Head of State affirmed that the handshake was an expression of goodwill, friendship, trust and reconciliation and that there would be no going back.

"'I have heard the cries of the people, their stated hopes and aspirations. There will be no turning back on the handshake war on corruption.

"No turning back on the war against corruption as it is a just war, a war to prevent misuse of public resources for selfish interests by those we have entrusted to manage them" he stated.

He called on everyone to play their role in enhancing unity for the development of the country as the initiative had resulted in a six percent growth in the economy.

"Our handshake has been followed by millions of handshakes across the length and breadth of our nation," he added.

Prior to the address, Kandara MP Alice Wahome had expressed her reservations about the handshake deal.

"The president should forget about the handshake. Many of us in Jubilee do not believe in the handshake…it is not working! ," she stated during an interview on Citizen TV:
