Kenyan Athlete Kenneth Mungara Who Made History in India and Canada

Many athletes have help raise the Kenyan flag in the global arena through their remarkable performance in field events.

However, 45-year-old Kenneth Mburu Mungara perhaps epitomizes the Kenyan championship when it comes to field and track events.

The man who holds the world marathon record in the Master's (age 40-44) group has been on a winning spree over the years.

If you are wondering how talented or skilled Mungara is, its good to note that he has never finished outside the Top 10 in a marathon since 2012.

In 2009, Mungara went to India and upset a record that had stood since 1978.

Participating in Mumbai Marathon, Mungara turned out victorious and his time of 2:11:51 was the fastest ever on Indian soil toppling Shivnath Singh's championship reign that had last nearly three decades.

A few months later, the specialist marathoner headed to the 2009 Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

He was here to defend his title but ended breaking the Canadian all-comers' record after clocking 2:08:31.

Though this came as a surprise even to Mungara, his manager had told him that he would run 2:08.

Taking part at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2010, the athlete pushed his record higher clocking 2:07:57 in his third consecutive win of the event.

In July 2015, Mungara went for the Gold Coast Marathon in Australia for the first time.

When he crossed the finishing line, the man was a champion having clocked 2:08:42.

In 2016, he was at it again and in what turned to be one of the thrilling finishes in marathon history, he successfully defended his title by edging out Japanese running legend, Yuki Kawauchi, by a mere one second!

He ousted the defending champion Silah Limo by only 12 seconds and set what remains as the course's and Australian All-Comers' record.
