Family of Slain Tycoon Pleads for Lenient Sentencing of Killer

The family of the late Mombasa tycoon - Isaack Kassim, made a rare plea to have the self-confessed killer (Ngira Karisa) handed a lenient sentence.

On Monday, judge Eric Ogola took their statements into consideration and handed Mr Karisa an 8-year sentence.

Kassim’s family stated that they had come to terms with the death of their son whom Karisa confessed to having murdered in cold blood.

“The court should consider our forgiveness while pronouncing itself during the sentencing," the family stated through their lawyer.

In addition, the slain businessman's family affirmed that they had accepted the apologies made by the accused who they felt had shown an honest degree of regret over his actions.

Mr Karisa had pleaded guilty of murdering the Mombasa businessman on March 8, 2018, and gone on to express remorse over the act.

Judge Ogola explained that he had arrived at his final decision hinged on the plea bargaining agreement, adding that plea bargaining saves the court tonnes of time that would have otherwise been used to comb through stacks of evidence.

"I am persuaded that eight will be fair for the accused person," the judge divulged.

The accused disclosed that he had entered into the plea bargaining agreement due to a deep sense of guilt and remorse over what he confessed to having been coerced actions.

Karisa was charged alongside two other people - Eddlied Mandi Jilani, a driver at the Kilifi County Government and Makonde Buni, over the murder of Kassim Jiraw alias Sokorow on the Mombasa-Malindi Road on March 8.
