Attorney General Paul Kihara Kariuki on Tuesday sought to educate politicians allied to DP William Ruto on the role of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
A report by Nation indicates that Kariuki shed more light on the work of the agency when he appeared before the National Assembly's Justice and Legal Affairs Committee.
The AG had been asked whether the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) had delegated some of its roles to the DCI.
Kihara explained that those who had been criticizing DCI boss George Kinoti for going beyond his jurisdiction have no understanding of the law.
"It's a provision of National Police Service Act, section 35, that DCI undertakes investigations on serious crimes, including money laundering. It also detects and prevents crime.
"There is, therefore, a misunderstanding because of inadequate knowledge on the law,” he stated.
The DP allies have previously questioned the jurisdiction of the DCI in investigating corruption matters.
On March 15, Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murokomen called for the immediate sacking of Kinoti.
The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator accused the top detective of being biased in the fight against corruption.
Murkomen claimed that the DCI boss was being used to bring down certain politicians.
