The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDB) has removed 2,063 medical practitioners and 212 dental practitioners from its register, Capital News reports.
According to the publication, the board took action on the 2,275 doctors because they failed to apply for retention for the year 2019.
In a statement, KMPDB CEO Daniel Yumbya revealed that those who had been de-registered had not complied with Section 14 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act.
It states, “Every such license shall be for such period and may contain such conditions as the Director of Medical Services shall, with the consent or on the instruction of the Board, impose."
Yumbya went on to explain that the details of de-registered practitioners and those who are duly registered are available on the board’s website.
He asked those who wanted to be reinstated to apply for an annual retention certificate.
Doctors are required to pay Ksh 4,000 to obtain a certificate and be duly registered.
This way, the board is able to keep track of doctors who work in both the public and private health sectors.
In so doing, KMPDB can, therefore, single out quack doctors who operate illegally without the required licenses.
