Landlady Allegedly Kills Man Over Ksh500 Rent in Bungoma

Residents of Bungoma were, on Wednesday, met with shocking scenes when the body of a man who was reported missing was found in his landlady's house.

Upon making the discovery, the irate locals descended on the landlady and her husband at Mpeli Village in Chwele Market, Kabuchai Constituency in Bungoma Central.

Reports by Citizen Digital indicate that Loice Kasambeli (31) and her spouse allegedly murdered the man upon failing to pay rent of Ksh 500.

The tenant, who engaged in menial jobs to make ends meet, engaged in a heated debate with Kasambeli before his disappearance.

A neighbour, Robert Wangila, told journalists that the landlady was ruthless to tenants who failed to pay the rent on time.

“We had earlier confronted Kasembeli and asked her where our (now-deceased) neighbour was. She declined to respond directly, only saying she has a detention cell, in which she throws rent defaulters. Early today (Wednesday), we stormed her house and found the man’s lifeless body in one of the rooms,” Wangila stated.

The man whom the police declined to identify had visible neck injuries and was hanging from an improvised rope made out of a leso that was tied to the roof.

The residents stormed the house and later set it on fire. Police arrived at the scene and managed to rescue the couple for the crowd's rage.

Confirming the incident, Bungoma Central Sub-County Police Commander, David Kandie, stated that investigations were ongoing into the circumstances that led to the man's death.

The deceased was taken to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary.
