Elite Police Officer Arrested Over Ksh14M ATMs Theft

An elite squad police officer was on Friday arrested in connection to Ksh14 million that was stolen from four ATM machines of a local bank, Nation reports.

According to the publication, George Gachungu Njoroge, who is attached to the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), is one of the key suspects in the case.

He was nabbed by detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit (ECU) and is expected to assist in the ongoing investigations.

In a Kamukunji police station report that was seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Gachugu was accused of conspiring to commit the offence with others on diverse dates between April 15 and April 20. 

He was further accused of vandalizing an ATM machine along Moi Avenue.

While addressing journalist on Thursday, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti revealed that the bank heist was an inside job. 

Kinoti explained that the incident happened with the full knowledge of some people who were working for the bank. 

“They know exactly what happened. The outsiders were just there to facilitate the operation, after which they go and share the money, but this time we will reveal to the public what happened,” he stated.

G4S has since distanced itself from the theft. In a statement. the security services company explained that it was not guarding any of the ATM machines that lost cash.
