Angry Sonko Exposes Senator Johnson Sakaja's Ksh40M Tax Fraud

A seemingly angry Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, on Monday, fired back at the county's Senator Johnson Sakaja exposing his alleged tax evasion.

Appearing before the Senate County Public Accounts and Investment Committee chaired by Senator Moses Kajwang', the governor intimated that Sakaja had cost the county's revenues by not settling taxes amounting to Kshs40 million.

He also revealed that the senator, through a company identified as Seven Star Media Ltd, had refused to remit the levies after erecting billboards and poles across the city.

He accused the company of tampering with the environment as it had been cutting down trees so that its line of billboards could be visible to travelers.

“Senator Sakaja has been doing business with Nairobi City County, acting with impunity and has refused to pay revenue," stated the governor.

Our efforts to reach Sakaja were, however, futile as he did not pick our calls nor respond to text messages.

Sonko was responding to questions about the county's failure to collect up to Ksh7.5 Billion in revenue across the city highlighted by the state's Auditor General Edward Ouko.

In his defence, Sonko argued that the national government still owed the county up to Ksh180 Billion arrears in parking, rent and land rates.

“There are many factors that contributed to this shortfall, however, the national government failure to meet their obligations hurt us most,” explained Sonko.

The two leaders have had wrangles in the recent past over the governor's decision not to appoint a deputy for the past one year.
