Yvonne Okwara Trashes Atwoli on Live TV

Citizen TV's Yvonne Okwara blasted COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli over how Labour Day celebrations were conducted on Wednesday at Uhuru Park.

While giving her take on her News Gang segment of Thursday night's news bulletin, she stated that Labour Day celebrations had become a one-man show for Atwoli.

She explained that this was portrayed by the songs of praise that were performed on the day, attire and political pronouncements that followed.

The event which was surprisingly snubbed by the Federation of Kenyan Employers (FKE) was dubbed as a "kieleweke rally" (referring to the faction of government officials who are in open opposition against Deputy President William Ruto).

The hard-hitting anchor added that this year's celebrations were marked by a low turn out.

"Praise songs that were reminiscent of the sycophancy of the KANU days appeared to be the signature of the day. The Praise party complete with performing artists donning COTU attire was, to say the least, embarrassing,"

She also castigated the sideshow that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's Defence Forces group caused when its members entered Uhuru Park waving placards while blowing whistles, clad in white shirts and riding on motorcycles, causing the proceedings to come to a stop.

Yvonne noted that a focus on issues affecting workers was conspicuously missing on an event meant to address them.

At a time when jobs are increasingly hard to come by, she explained that the day's agenda was clearly misplaced.

She described the present day work environment as overwhelming overburdening for Kenyan labourers and their plight should have come first.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, who had attended the Uhuru Park event, left after expressing disappointment over the way it was conducted.

"It’s sad I attended Labour Day thinking its a Workers Day. It turns out to be just another NASA rally," Kuria stated.

Yvonne's take on the matter was well received by viewers who agreed on the points she raised.

"Yvonne Okwara's take tonight tackles Kenya workers' issues which is worthwhile watching rather than all the speeches made yesterday by stupid politicians and the COTU officials," commented Eunice Tanui

"If a country decides to elect crooks to represent them, worship and treat politicians as superhumans, then that marks the start of a failing nation," noted Dennis Murithi
