SGR Noise to Cost Gov't an Extra Ksh467 Million

The government has been forced to spend another Ksh467 million over the noise emanating from the SGR locomotives.

This money will be spent to relocate a school and a hospital that are located adjacent to the railway line.

The management had complained to the government by writing to the Kenya Railways asking to be relocated due to the disturbance from the trains when they pass by.

Both Kathekani Secondary School and Mtito Andei Hospital are in Kibwezi, Makueni county.

Michael Mung’ata who is the chairman of the Kathekani Secondary School board revealed that their request had been accepted and the move will happen in the next one year.

Kibwezi Sub-County Director of Education Kennedy Machora confirmed the plans.

He stated that the school will be newly constructed at a cost of Ksh225.5 million while the hospital will cost Ksh242.4 million.

This amount will be over and above the initial Ksh350 billion that the government spent in the construction of the railway.

This comes at a time when the former National Land Commission (NLC) Chairman Mohamed Swazuri has been charged in a court for illegally compensating landowners.

The charges that Swazuri and his co-accused are facing include conspiracy to commit an economic crime, abuse of office, financial misconduct, unlawful acquisition of public property, dealing with suspect property and money laundering.
