Kenyan Team Risks Detention in Uganda Over Unpaid Bills

The Kenya Women's volleyball team is at risk of being detained in Kampala over unpaid hotel bills amounting to Ksh1 million.

This is not the first time a Kenyan team is encountering financial constraints while on duty in a foreign country.

The team, known as Malkia Strikers, is competing at the African Games qualifiers in Kampala.

Kenya Volleyball Federation first vice president, Charles Nyaberi, stated that the hotel management threatened to confiscate the passports of the team and hold them prisoners, Citizen Digital reports.

“The ministry officials told us they will meet today (Tuesday) and we’re just waiting to see if they will clear the bills because the hotel’s management has warned us that they will not allow us leave the hotel without paying our bills.

“We just hope the officials will walk the talk and find a solution because this competition ends today and we have not paid any coin,” he continued.

Nyaberi added that the team had left the country without any funding from the government as top officials were not around to approve the money needed.

“The ministry only paid air tickets and I can confirm no single player or official has received any allowance for this tournament and also for the two weeks we were camping at Kasarani, we hope this will be sorted out.

" We are doing well regardless of this issue and I hope the players will be respected for keeping Kenya's flag high,” he cited.

Kenya has still emerged victorious amid the challenges beating Rwanda and Ethiopia in the opening matches of the four-nation tournament.
