President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday joined Muslims at Jamia Mosque for iftar, making history as the first Head of State to do so.
Iftar, also known in English as fatoor, is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset.
The president was accompanied by Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed the Prime Minister of the Republic of Yemen, Tourism CS Najib Balala Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale other Muslim leaders.
For being the first President to join Muslim faithful at the mosque during the holy month of Ramadhan, he received a carton full of translated copies of the Quran to distribute as he wishes.
The president was dressed in a white kanzu and similar coloured and even had his shoes off in respect of the religion's practices.
Uhuru delivered his message of goodwill to all Muslims for the holy month of Ramadhan and promised that his government would work to ingrain at least one of their holidays in the Kenyan constitution.
He also called for Kenyans to learn how to tolerate one another despite their religious backgrounds, adding that criminals should not hide behind religion to conduct their activities.
Duale, who had jokingly introduced the President as Sheikh Uhuru Kenyatta, presented a request from the Muslim community to the president to help them get a charter for Umma University, the first Islamic institution of higher education in Kenya.
He also disclosed that almost 10,000 Muslim faithful had gathered and tuned in to listen to the president.
