Tanga Tanga MPs Protest Old Currency Validity Deadline

MPs allied to Deputy President William Ruto have faulted the deadline set for the phasing out of the old Ksh 1000 note.

Speaking during a church service in Kahawa Wendani where they had accompanied Ruto on Sunday, Kimani stated that the October 1, date should be revised.

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wa stated that October was too far and that the deadline should be brought forward to July 1.

"The Central Bank Governor said we have four months up to October. In my opinion, that is too far away. Kenya's financial year starts in July so if it is possible, the president should make that the deadline for the validity of the Ksh 1000 notes," he spoke.

The MP's sentiments were echoed by his colleagues from parliament who had also attended the church service among them Issac Mwaura, Simon King'ara, and Ndindi Nyoro.

Speaking about the design of the new look currency, Kimani told Kenyans.co.ke that the only thing that mattered was how to get it to Kenyans to help uplift their lives and promote their businesses.

He hinted that the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee would meet with Treasury CS Henry Rotich to implement President Uhuru's directive on payment of pending bills.

During his Madaraka Day speech, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed that all Accounting Officers pay and settle all pending payments that do not have Audit Queries, on or before the end of the current Financial Year, 30th June 2019.

Further, he instructed the National Treasury to secure full compliance of the directive adding that the County Governments needed to follow suit.
