Undercover Journalist Surprises Traders With New Banknotes While Shopping [VIDEO]

An undercover reporter from Nairobi News on shopping for vegetables to see how familiar Kenyans were with the new generation banknotes.

Armed with a hidden camera and a new Ksh 1,000 note, the journalist approached an unsuspecting mama mboga and ordered a bunch of indigenous pigweed.

After receiving the note, the vegetable trader who had all along been speaking in Swahili reverted to Kikuyu in shock and asked, "Ngai! Kai wa ndiha na iriku (Which kind of money are you paying me with)?"

She momentarily forgot she had customer to attend to and started calling her fellow traders to come to see the money.

Within no time a crowd had already gathered to see the new generation Ksh 1,000 note.

One of her friends declared that she was not ready to start accepting the new currency as payment.

The people who had come to view the money started passing it around further away from from the journalist who owned it.

The reporter was afraid the banknote would disappear and at some point, she raised the alarm and asked for her money to be brought back.

"Msipekeke huko mbali, leta (Don't take it too far, bring it back)," she instructed.

The new currency sparked discussions about its design with some of the women noting that it was much smaller than the ones they were used to.

"It is very easy to lose this note," she commented.

The currency also caused a commotion at Zimmerman in Githurai 44 on Friday where the Kenyans.co.ke editor saw a conductor boasting about the new notes he had just gotten a hold of.

He was showing it off to his colleagues and anyone who cared to admire his money.
