Deputy President William Ruto has hit out at government officials who secretly funded a Mt Kenya elders meeting on Friday in Nyeri County where speakers launched verbal attacks on him.
Speaking during a church service at Revival Sanctuary of Glory Church in Riruta, Dagoretti South on Sunday, Ruto faulted the said officials for convening the elders and duping them into bashing him.
"State officers should not have wasted taxpayer money by funding a meeting where respected elders were lied to about some perceived political debt," Ruto spoke.
"I want to declare that there are only two types of debts in Kenya. The national debt that we have used to build the SGR and other development projects.
"The other debt is what President Uhuru Kenyatta and I promised to Kenyans during the campaign period. The Jubilee Party manifesto had promised clean water, roads, electricity, and education," he added.
Ruto challenged that instead of wasting money organising such meetings meant to undermine his presidential bid, the funds should have been redirected to build infrastructure.
Nation, on Sunday, established that officials from State House were behind the meeting in question.
"The meeting, organised by the Kikuyu Council of Elders (KCE) and attended by more than 2,000 elders, cost more than Ksh10 million to organise, multiple sources revealed," reported the local daily.
Delegates came from Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga and Laikipia as well as from Nairobi, Nakuru and even Lamu Counties.
Speakers at the meeting took turns to attack Ruto and Central Kenya MPs allied to him, accusing them of “auctioning” the region for personal gain.
