DPP Haji's Ex-Staffer Slapped with Ksh200K Fine for Ksh60K Bribe

A former staffer of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has suffered three times more punishment for a bribery offense he committed.

According to a statement by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the former prosecutor, James Naburuk Sichangi, who worked with the DPP's office in Kitale, was convicted of an offense of soliciting a Ksh 60,000 bribe.

The Anti-Corruption Court in Eldoret town, therefore, fined him Ksh 200,000 for the offense.

"James Naburuk Sichangi, a former prosecutor DPP office in Kitale convicted and fined Ksh200,000 by the anti-corruption court in Eldoret for soliciting and receiving a bribe of Ksh 60,000 from a complainant in a criminal case," read the DPP statement in part.

In early May, a Nairobi County Askari (officer) was hit with a Ksh 750,000 fine for reportedly demanding a Ksh 3,000 bribe.

The suspect, Joshua Okanga, was also charged with soliciting and receiving a bribe and also for obstructing and concealing of evidence.

At the time, the suspect was faced with a five-year jail term if he failed to pay the fine.

"In default, the suspect will serve five-year imprisonment for soliciting and receiving a bribe, obstruction and concealing of evidence.

"The suspect had demanded a bribe of Kshs. 3,000," read a statement from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
