DJ Shiti Narrates How Nairobi Prostitutes Helped Him

Popular comedian Steven Oduor Dede alias DJ Shiti opened up on how Nairobi prostitutes helped him to adapt to city life when he was homeless and trying to make a breakthrough in his acting career.

Speaking with K24’s Betty Kyallo in Upclose With Betty, Shiti revealed that had relocated to Nairobi from Nakuru to try his luck at Churchill Live show and he didn’t have shelter as his cousin and several relatives snubbed him.

I made friends among the commercial sex workers at Koinange street. They loved how I spoke and nicknamed me Mr. Motivator. They, however, usually probed me to tell them where I stay, and after a few inquiries, I bowed into their demands and told them the truth," the DJ disclosed.

"They took me to a house along River Road, where they usually undertook their commercial businesses. I lived there for some time,” Shiti added.

However, the prolific comedian's safe haven was later ravaged by city askaris who stormed the place out of the blue, stating that they had enough evidence to prove that the den was being used as a hideout for thieves. They also claimed that stolen goods were being hidden at the place.

My bag got lost in the scuffle, and that gave me enough reasons not to go back to Nakuru. The county council officers raided the place after a client accused a lady of not serving him well. The man also set me up for sleeping under the bed. He destroyed a number of lives, as I also usually allowed some other upcoming struggling artists to reside at the place,Shitty humorously recalls.

The comedian, however, did not give up as he and his friend Mariano Simba would go on trying to get a few places to sleep.

We went to Kayole to seek shelter at a friend's place but the house was unbearable. We went to railways where we found a Luhya guy who I spoke to in my vernacular. He initially thought I was a conman but allowed us to seek shelter at his place in Dandora Phase IV for one day,” Shiti remembers.

The comedian would, later on, meet famous scriptwriter Abel Mutua, who linked him to play a casting role in The Real House helps of Kawangware.

The show is a hilarious comedy show depicting the daily lives of house helps.
