Governor Sonko Issues New Directive on County Jobs

Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, on Sunday issued a new directive regarding the future of county government jobs.

In the decree, the county government would now give priority to volunteers and casual workers when employment opportunities arise.

Sonko ordered the County Public Service Board to ensure that the casuals and volunteers who have worked for long were given first priority during any future employment of staff.

The main target, according to the governor, is the Early Childhood Development and Education and health sectors that have more casuals and volunteers.

“We are going to ensure that all those that have been working in all county Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres as casuals are absorbed. We will not allow people from outside to be given priority,” Sonko asserted.

He explained that the absorption of casual workers and volunteers was expected to help counter the unemployment problem that has been a constant thorn in the side.

In a move that is expected to bode well with the majority of casual labourers as well as volunteers across the county, Sonko also promised to ensure that those who qualify to offer clinical services are absorbed permanently by the county.

“We know some of you have worked as volunteers in the slum areas for so many years. We must now consider you in our next employment," he affirmed.

His Communications Director and Media Chief Officer, Jacob Elkana disclosed that the county would advertise for jobs in the health sector before the end of the year.

Nairobi County currently has 229 public ECDE centres, filled with an estimated 21,000 learners. A clear growth having initially estimated enrolment of 17,000 by the end of 2018.
