Jaguar's Murky Past Resurfaces After Arrest

They say the past always has a way of catching up with you and this seems to be the case for the recently incarcerated Starehe MP Charles Njagua alias Jaguar.

Just a day after the MP was arrested outside parliament over recent remarks that were deemed xenophobic, his previous records with the authorities made their rounds across various social media platforms.

Vocal Kenyan activist, Boniface Mwangi, was the first to post a charge sheet allegedly linked to Jaguar regarding a 2017 accident in which two innocent motorists lost their lives.

"Jaguar was charged with killing two people, a boda boda rider, Mugo Mwangi, and his passenger, Joseph Maingi. Court found him guilty and fined him Ksh 20,000 or in default six months imprisonment," Mwangi posted.

The charge sheet dated April 10, 2017, disclosed Jaguar's exact charges which were 'causing death by dangerous driving contrary to section 46 (1) of the Traffic Act Cap 403 Laws of Kenya.

A narrative of the entire incident was documented on the scripts prepared at Sagana police station and posted on Twitter.

"On March 21, 2017, at around 1500 Hrs along Sagana-Makutano road, within Kirinyaga county, being the driver of a motor vehicle registration number KCB 808J Range Rover Sports...knocked down a motorcyclist causing the death of a pillion passenger namely Joseph Maingi Kairia," an excerpt of the charge sheet divulged.

The post re-opened old wounds, with netizens weighing in on the matter which they felt was swept under the rug as was always the case when wealthy politicians found themselves on the wrong side of the law in Kenya.

"Ati 20k or 6 months! And the way people are languishing in jail for small crimes. The magistrate should be suspended and the case reopened," David Mwangi posted.

Others pointed out the unfairness of most cases involving the less privileged yet the rich were allowed to live with reckless impunity.

"And a few weeks ago, a woman was jailed for 30 years in Nyeri for stealing Ksh 2,000. Now Jaguar gets 6 months for claiming two souls. Savage!" Freddy Musyoka posted.
