Good News on Tax Returns Filing After KRA's New Announcement

Good news has come through for Kenyans during these last days of filing tax returns following an announcement by the Kenya Revenue Authority.

According to a press release seen by Kenyans.co.ke, KRA, on Thursday, notified the public that it would be extending its working hours and would offer services this Sunday, June 30, despite being outside their working hours.

In the statement, the authority explained that it made the move because Sunday was the final day that Kenyans would be filing their taxes and that it wants as many people to do the filing as possible.

"The offices comprises all Customs offices including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and iTax Service Centers countrywide to facilitate taxpayers to pay and file their 2018 and other prior annual tax returns.

"Customs offices supporting port operations are open 24 hours to facilitate customs services whereas the iTax Service Centers will operate from 7:00AM-9: 00 PM. The Contact Centre shall be operational from 6:00AM-12:00 Midnight," read the statement in part.

At the time of publishing this story, only three days remained until the tax filing process for January 2018 to December 2018 officially closes.

Daily Nation reported that close to 1.3 million Kenyans were yet to file their taxes.

KRA records indicated that 2.7 million had already complied with the directive as of June 23.

Those who will fail to file their taxes by the set date risk a fine of Ksh 10,000 or five per cent of the tax payable for the year under review.

Those who file for employment income only, however, face a fine of Ksh 10,000 or 20 per cent of income tax payable in the year the return is meant to capture.
