Matiang'i Puts Media Houses On Notice Over Incitement

Interior Cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i has put county based media houses on notice over what he claimed to be incitement.

Speaking during a meeting with the Marsabit Interfaith Delegation on peace, Matiang'i claimed that some of the outlets had been spewing hate messages that incited ethnic violence.

He further revealed that the media houses that spew hate speech would face censorship from the government.

Matiangi’i also noted that the government was closely monitoring the media houses to ensure they operate within the laid down regulations.

At the same time, Matiang'i announced that social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter were also being closely monitored to filter hate messages.

His sentiments came after local clerics raised concern that some radio stations were being used to preach ethnic hatred.

The CS added that he would lead a government delegation to Marsabit where he would meet political and religious leaders to discuss a lasting solution towards peace.

He noted that the involvement of community elders would be a good step towards solving long-standing disputes that are a source of the violence.

This warning shots were fired a few days after the National Cohesion and Integration Commission(NCIC) released a report on the counties that were considered to be hate speech hot spots.

The Integration Commission noted that cited Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kakamega, Nakuru, Nyeri and Kilifi as counties where incitement and hate mongering were rampant.

NCIC Assistant Director Kyalo Mwengi, who is in charge of complaints, legal and enforcement, reported that the commission flagged the counties after a national survey.
