Captain (Rtd) Kung'u Muigai, one of President Uhuru Kenyatta's cousin, on Thursday, narrated what transpired when the late Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore wanted to seek his wife, Wambui Kamiru's hand in marriage.
Speaking at Bob's memorial service held at the All Saints Cathedral, Kung'u recalled leading discussions from Wambui side of the family since her late father had left him to take care of them.
Bob, on the other hand, had constituted a team comprising among others, the then Attorney General Githu Muigai and KCB CEO Joshua Oigara.
"They came to our home. Of course, Githu Muigai, because of the connotation of our names (they shared the name Muigai), tried to intimidate me to call him father. I agreed but that didn't help him. He tried to pull rank as Attorney General but that didn't wash and they realised they have come up against a seasoned dowry bargainer.
"And of course, I was quick to remind him (Githu) about his son's (Bob) seven-figure salary. Things didn't help because his deputy was Joshua Oigara the CEO of KCB.
"Bob was very worried because he had no idea what was going on but the beauty about it, he was telling the professor (Githu) 'whatever they want just do it'," Kungu narrated to the amusement of the audience.
He went on to note that it was just banter and there was a limit to the conditions they would have imposed on Bob.
"You can't ask for more that is allowed but of course you gain by putting penalties and fines whether real or imagined and with us who come from the coffee growing areas, when the coffee ripens we say 'kahua ni kerua' (the coffee has ripened) and that was my time to pick the coffee.
"Eventually, when I told Bob Collymore I have consented and I gave him Wambui's hand in marriage, the man lit up like a Christmas tree," Kung'u concluded.
As many have come to find out, the two love birds were a match made in heaven and they supported each other until his death on July 1, 2019.
