Nairobi City County motorists are set to feel the pinch as the county government is set to increase the parking fees.
In a proposal tabled before the county assembly, the Mike Sonko-led government seeks to double the parking fee in the Central Business District (CBD) from the current Ksh 200 to Ksh 400 per day.
The move will also see parking charges of Ksh 200 introduced in residential areas with motorists paying Ksh 300 at shopping centers and business hubs.
Hubs and shopping centers were listed as Upper Hill, Community, Westlands, Yaya Centre, Eastleigh, Industrial Area, Karen, Gigiri, Ngara and Hurlingham.
According to the proposal, the move was necessitated by the drop in Nairobi revenues and decongesting the CBD.
City Hall added that traffic jam costs the city an estimated Ksh37 billion in fuel and lost man-hours.
Reports by Business Daily indicated that the increased charges come a year after representatives shot down similar proposals last September and instead slashed it to Ksh 200.
Parking fees have been the biggest source of revenue for Nairobi City Hall with collections of about Ksh2 billion annually.
However, corruption and collusion between parking attendants and motorists have denied the city administration the much-needed revenue.
Parking fees for non-commercial buses and lorries will be Ksh 1,000 while trucks will pay Ksh 3,000 in the central business district and half that amount in the residential areas.
Those paying monthly tickets will part with Ksh 7,000 and Ksh 55,000 if they opt for annual permits.
