The Kenyan online fraternity was at it again on Tuesday, contributing to some of the hot trending topics of the day including:
Morgan Heritage
Flamboyant city lawyer, Donald Kipkorir, on Tuesday, found himself on the receiving end on social media after his attempts to shame Jamaican Grammy-Winning Band, Morgan Heritage, and singer Alaine flopped.
It all started after Kipkorir sensationally claimed that the musicians were little known in the Caribbean country yet Kenyans accorded them significant status in Kenya than they deserve.
“I was in Jamaica for one week & travelled across the country. I asked the drivers I used & waiters in the restaurants I visited if they knew Alaine or Morgan Heritage ... None of the Jamaicans I asked knew them ... They are unknowns in Jamaica ... Kenya makes “stars” of non-stars,” he tweeted.
The city lawyer, who had earlier posted photos of his Jamaica tour, where he had gone to celebrate his birthday, added salt to injury by claiming that the three members of the band, that frequently visits Kenya, were con artists.
“And FYI (For Your Information), the three members in Kenya left the group in 1994 ... Though unknown, Morgan Heritage is a family band, all who still live in Jamaica ... The three in Kenya are conning Kenyans... The trio isn’t Members of Morgan Heritage,” he declared.
His remarks didn't boil so well with Kenyans who sought to educate the learned friend for being ignorant.
Some pointed out that he could have confused the locals with his Kalenjin accent, thus the misinformation.
Lion King
Beyonce Knowles unveiled “Spirit”, the rousing first track from an album of songs she has curated for the forthcoming reboot of The Lion King, and her worldwide fanbase, affectionately known as the beyhive, couldn't keep calm.
Written by Beyoncé and Labrinth and featured in a pivotal moment in the film, the song marks the first peek at the star’s Lion King soundtrack album titled The Gift, which will be released on 19 July.
Beyoncé produced and curated the record, which will reportedly feature new tracks inspired by the film and performed by Beyoncé and several so-far unannounced African artists.
Beyonce will play a role in the movie as the voice of the character Nala.
Similarly, on Monday morning, Kenyans could not help but get excited after noticing pictures of music power couple Jay Z and Beyonce standing in front of the Magical Kenya logo.
The logo appeared on the yellow banner that was the background of almost every photo from the London premiere of the 2019 Disney classic remake, which happened on Sunday night July 14, 2019, in London.
Many social media users went ahead to praise the Magical Kenya team for a good job of identifying the perfect way of putting the country on the map by sponsoring the movie premiere.
Uber Strike
A strike by online taxi drivers saw most vehicles stay off the roads Monday, more than doubling the charges for riders moving around the city.
The topic dominated and topped the trends with Kenyans expressing varying comments.
Street taxis made booming business as Uber, Bolt and Little cab drivers participated in the mass boycott that is intended to push for doubling of customer charges.
Prices of the app-based services surged for most routes within Nairobi and its environs while customers faced long request times for rides that would ordinarily be available in a matter of few minutes.
Pangani
Several Pangani Estate tenants were forced to spend their Monday night in the cold after the county's bulldozers demolished their houses.
The incident happened at around 11.30 pm when the residents were fast asleep.
As expected, the demolition sparked a storm with a majority of Kenyans expressing disappointment in the manner in which the matter was handled.
The bulldozers arrived in the dead of the night reportedly breaking up windows and doors. This forced the residents to scamper for safety as the operation, that caught them unawares, continued for the better part of the night.
Pangani Estate is among seven Nairobi estates that are listed for redevelopment. The others are Ngong Road Phases I and II, Uhuru Estate, New Ngara, Old Ngara, Suna Road, and Jeevanjee.
Esther Arunga (Mother in law)
Former TV anchor, Esther Arunga's mother-in-law, broke her silence following her testimony in which she admitted to lying to the police over the murder of her son.
In a sit-down with Daily Nation on Monday, a teary Rosemeg Wambita discounted Arunga's testimony claiming that it was all a lie.
She further refuted claims that her son, Quincy Timberlake, was a murderer arguing that if that was the case, the former TV siren would not have agreed to settle down with him for as long as she did.
“That is a lie. I don’t understand what she means since she is the one who said that their son did not die at the hands of her husband.
“Where was she all this time? This is peculiar to me. It is a lie. I don’t understand it," Ms Wambita fumed.
