7 More Nairobi City Estates Set for Demolition

Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, on Thursday, confirmed that the Pangani house evictions marked the start of county-wide demolitions aimed at facilitating the government's big 4 agenda.

Speaking on behalf of the county, Harrison Kinyanjui (the county's lawyer), affirmed that there were seven more estates up for demolition.

"All the residents residing in estates earmarked for construction of affordable housing projects must be relocated to pave way for the construction of new housing units," he asserted.

The seven were identified as Old and New Ngara, Jeevanjee, Suna Road, Ngong Road Phase One and Two and Uhuru Estate.

Kinyanjui was at the high court where a petition filed by Pangani residents, who were evicted on Monday, was dismissed.

The residents had moved to court in a bid to stop the governments plan to set up new houses under the affordable houses tenet of its overall plans.

However, Sonko, via an email shared with Kenyans.co.ke, was quick to point out that all evicted tenants from Pangani had been compensated, as well as served with a notice of the pending demolitions, well in advance of Monday's move.

“All the 48 tenants affected by the project have all been compensated Ksh 600,000 to pay for rent in their temporary residence for a period of less than 12 months," Sonko affirmed.

The Nairobi governor went on to explain that the tenants set to be affected by the evictions will be given first priority to own houses to be constructed in the designated areas.
