Audrey Mbugua Wins Big at Kenyan Court

Vocal transgender activist, Audrey Mbugua, was handed a huge victory at the Appellate court on Monday.

She had moved to court after the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) refused to change her academic certificates to portray her new identity.

However, the court moved to uphold a decision by the high court, compelling the examination body to immediately change her credentials, in accordance with her new gender.

“All in all, we are not persuaded that the appellant has established a basis for this court to interfere with the decision of the lower court,” Justices Philip Waki, Gatembu Kairu and Otieno Odek ruled.

Audrey, born as Andrew Mbugua, was born and raised as a boy. He enrolled at Kiambu High School where he attained a mean grade of A- back in 2001.

During an interview with Radio Jambo on July 3, 2019, she confessed to having first experienced her battle with her sexuality when she was 19, going on to add that her father almost collapsed when she came out with the news.

The transgender activist has been receiving medical treatment at Mathari Hospital, for gender identity disorder.

Her doctor, Catherine Syengo Mutisya, affirmed that Audrey had the condition, adding that she underwent all her treatments on schedule.

Ms Mutisya further added that Audrey faced a lot of stigma and challenges while using her personal documents, which indicated that she was still a man, despite having transitioned to the other gender spectrum.

The embattled activist had in January 2012 issued a gazette notice in which she renounced 'Andrew' as her name, and assumed her current identity as Audrey.
