Kenya's Trending Topics on Monday 22 July, 2019

Monday blues aside, Kenyans were having a field day on social media for the better part of the day, engaging on various issues of interest to them.

Here are the trending topics netizens were most engaged in during the day:

Henry Rotich/ Kimwarer and Arror / DPP Haji

All these were trending because of the same topic.

The week started with the news of Treasury CS Henry Rotich's anticipated and eventual arrest. He was among 28 named by DPP Noordin Haji over the Kimwarer and Arror dams scandal.

The CS, alongside his Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge, as well as NEMA CEO, Geoffrey Wahungu, presented themselves at the DCI headquarters after their arrest was ordered.

In April, President Uhuru Kenyatta, stated during the State of The Nation Address that all government officers would cease holding office once they are charged in court.

As such, Kenyans were wondering who would take over from CS Rotich once he is arraigned in court over the allegations.

Floated to take up the post is economist, David Ndii, which he gleefully declined referring to a previous interview where he stated he would not take up a job offered by President Uhuru Kenyatta, because he did not respect the head of state.

#FirstClassBetrayal

A feature on Citizen TV showed the story of one Kelvin Ochieng', who graduated with a degree in Actuarial Science at UoN, but failed to secure employment.

Kevin had impressively managed to graduate with first-class honours but lived in the streets languishing in poverty.

His story elicited reactions online with many faulting the education system for not preparing graduates for the job market.

The search term "Acturial Science' featured prominently on google searches over the feature.

DP William Ruto

DP Ruto appeared on K24 TV's Punchline where he went head-to-head with Anne Kiguta. During the interview, many observed his deflective nature, choosing not to answer questions of public interest.

At the tail end of the interview, the DP promised that the government would complete 11 stadia by the end of 2020 - which was hard to swallow considering the Jubilee administration hadn't delivered on the initial five promised.

Punguza Mzigo Bill

The bill was among the most searched items by Kenyans on Google

After the Punguza Mzigo Bill got the green light from IEBC having raised the required number of signatures, Ekuru Aukot came out explaining why the referendum bill had merit.

Over the weekend, several ODM MPs called on their supporters to ignore the Ekuru Aukot-led Thirdway Alliance's move to have a referendum.

Senate Minority Leader James Orengo, MPs Otiende Amollo (Rarieda) and Opiyo Wandayi (Ugunja), who were in Siaya over the weekend, urged their electorate to otherwise consider supporting the proposal by the Building Bridges Initiative(BBI).
