New Twist After Legislators Raise Eyebrows Over County Finance Office Fire

Early hours of Monday morning, Kitui County Finance offices were engulfed in flames razing everything to the ground.

According to K24 digital, a group of MCAs from the area came out to cry foul over the fire, claiming it was a cover-up of major corruption in the county.

They were quick to note that, the fire came just when Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives were set to investigate alleged abuse of public funds.

Addressing the media at the scene, Kauwi MCA, Jane Mutua, urged detectives to investigate the cause of the fire, warning that the Kitui County Assembly had just recently raised concerns over alleged misuse of funds.

Mutua further alleged that the fact that the fire station is barely 100 metres from the office yet nothing was salvaged was a sign foul play.

But the Kitui Deputy Governor, Wathe Nzau, cautioned the public and leaders from speculating on the cause of the fire since investigations had been ordered.

Nzau further stated that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had since secured the scene and investigations into the cause of the fire were ongoing.

Kitui County Governor, Charity Ngilu, and the Finance minister, Mary Nguli, were not available for comment as the governor is out of the country while Nguli is on leave.

Daily Nation reported that early this year, thieves broke into the same Finance department and stole payment vouchers and other documents and no arrests have been made so far.

The fire also comes slightly over a year since another one gutted down the county Sports, Culture and Tourism offices.
