Uhuru Sends CS to Deliver Ksh100M Gold to Magufuli

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday sent Foreign Affairs CS, Monicah Juma, to Tanzania to hand over gold seized at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport , last year, to President John Magufuli after an earlier visit.

The handover of the gold worth Ksh100 million will happen at the Tanzanian State House in Dar-es-Salam with Magufuli presiding over the entire process.

She was accompanied by DCI boss George Kinoti, DPP Noordin Haji and AG Paul Kihara accompany CS to the neighbouring nation return.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) intercepted gold bars worth more than Ksh100 Million and arrested a Tanzanian national in Nairobi, in August 2018.

In a statement issued by KRA, the body disclosed that they acted on intelligence received and seized 32,255.50 grams of gold bars at JKIA.

The prime suspect had arrived in the country from Tanzania and was supposed to board a flight in Nairobi to his final destination, Dubai.

“The suspect was seized following intelligence alert. He had arrived at JKIA at 1505hrs on Friday, February 16, on board Precision Airlines from Mwanza via Kilimanjaro and was heading to Dubai aboard Kenya Airways,” the statement read in part.

The 46-year-old was also found with an accompanying invoice for the gold package that he was carrying.

Kenya's current constitution restricts transiting of unapproved precious metals and stones across the region.

The gold bars were held by KRA's Customs and Border Control body.

This comes less than a month after President Uhuru Kenyatta visited his Tanzanian counterpart, where they together visited Magufuli's ailing mother. Uhuru was gifted two peacocks by Magufuli, who was moved by the kind gesture.
