Waititu Handed More Days in Jail

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was, on Wednesday, handed 2 more days in remand after failing to raise the requisite Ksh15 million cash bail.

The county boss was escorted back to Industrial Area Remand where he slept on Tuesday.

However, the governor's wife, Susan Wangari Ndung'u, who spent the night at Lang'ata Women's Prison, was freed after she posted Ksh4 million bail.

A report that was done earlier by K24 indicated that she could not be set free because she was not able to surrender her passport to the court.

The broadcaster further revealed that Waititu's wife has never had a passport.

As such, her lawyer John Sakwa was asked to present a written letter from the immigration department to prove that she does not hold a passport.

Sakwa was expected to present the letter on Wednesday, July 31.

It was not immediately clear whether he handed the documents to the court.

The county boss and his wife were charged on Monday over Ksh588 million irregular tender alongside eight others implicated in the procurement law violation.

In the ruling, Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi gave the embattled governor and his wife three distinct conditions to ensure their freedom.

First, the governor was locked out of his public office until further notice, to give way for further investigations.

Waititu was also ordered to submit his travel documents with the relevant authorities.
