Rare Footage of Uhuru Moments After Birth

The birth of a newborn is always a joyous moment especially since the bundles of joy are considered a blessing.

October 26, 1961, was one such moment for Kenya's first President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and his youngest wife Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

In an undated video shared by renowned historian Levin Opiyo, seen by Kenyans.co.ke, an elated Jomo Kenyatta, received his newborn in Style.

In a motorcade of two vehicles and a leading motorbike, the former president was driven to Agha Khan Hospital, then referred to as Agha Khan Platinum Jubilee hospital to welcome the baby, that Opiyo claims to be Uhuru Kenyatta

The video shows an unidentified man, seated in the front passenger's seat of the classy Mercedes swiftly exiting the vehicle even before reaching a complete halt, in what has today become a familiar style for presidential escort staff.

A bouquet of flowers in hand, he opens the door for Mzee, before leading him to mama Ngina's ward.

While in the room, the calm Ngina holds her sleeping baby dearly as Jomo Kenyatta converses with her while holding on to the bouquet.

Occasional camera flashes appear, suggesting that the media may have been present to document the historic moment.

In September 2018, a nurse who aided the birth of Uhuru, made public for the first time, an account of the happenings at a maternity wing only set aside for members of prominent families.

In a past interview with Daily Nation's Kakamega Bureau Chief Benson AmadalaFreda Shibonje, a retired nurse recalled the events in 1961 as if they happened yesterday.

Ms Shibonje had joined Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, in December 1960, not knowing she'll attend to Mama Ngina to help bring forth President Kenyatta a few months later at the facility's VIP wing.

On the material day, patients were streaming in and she was able to recognise Mama Ngina Kenyatta, Mzee Kenyatta's wife.

"Whenever I see President Kenyatta on television screens, memories of the day I witnessed his birth come flooding back into my mind," she disclosed.
