Raila Speaks on Matiang'i Being President in 2022

ODM leader Raila Odinga responded to Gusii leaders who were pressuring him to endorse Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang'i, for the presidency in 2022.

Speaking on Friday, August 30, at the burial of former Nyaribari Masaba MP, Hezron Manduku, Raila urged the area leaders to focus on development matters and not to distract the peaceful mood within the country.

"Matiang’i is my son and I know he deserves the best. It is not yet time to start politicking and that is why we are against early political statements that will derail our country’s development agenda. Let him undertake his duties.

"The country must remain united before we get down to think of political formations. We have the handshake that is key in uniting Kenyans and fighting corruption,” Raila played coy.

Matiang'i further reiterated Raila's call to the leaders, adding that he would make the announcement that everyone is eagerly anticipating.

"It is time to work diligently for our people. One day I will make that announcement that most of you are waiting for. At the moment, we must continue to seek spiritual guidance before we think of anything else," Matiang'i affirmed Raila's statement.

He went on to assure Odinga that the Gusii people were in total support of the pact between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Matiang'i also delivered Uhuru's condolence message to the bereaved family.

“The death is a big loss to the family and the nation. There is no doubt that Manduku will be remembered by many,” Matiang'i read.

In August, Raila protested an article published by Nation, which reported that he was in the 2022 presidential race.

Deputy President William Ruto responded by making it clear that he was more than ready to battle it out with the ODM leader for the presidency in 2022.
