How Mzee Moi Celebrated His 95th Birthday [PHOTO]

Former President Daniel Moi turned 95 years old on Monday, September 2, and his family was not going to let the day pass without a celebration.

He celebrated the milestone at a lowkey function inside his Kabarak home and was surrounded by his close family members.

According to former press secretary Lee Njiru, the former head of state's family members who were present included his children and grandchildren.

“President Moi’s family members celebrated his life in a special way, to thank God for his life. Mzee Moi urged Kenyans to be thankful to God for his protection and good life,” Daily Nation quoted Njiru.

In a photo seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Moi is seen cutting the cake in the presence of members of the fourth estate.

His son, Gideon Moi, wished him a happy birthday describing his father as a beacon that continues to shine.

"Happy 95th birthday to H.E Mzee Moi. You are a beacon that continues to shine through the lives of the people. We wish you good health and abundant God's providence," shared Gideon.

Born on Sept 2, 1924, the former president worked as a teacher at Tambach Elementary School in Elgeyo Marakwet County before joining active politics in 1955 as a member of the legislative council.

Years later, he co-founded a political party, Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU), which challenged the then President, Jomo Kenyatta's Kenya Africa National Union (KANU).

He took over the top office in 1978 after the death of Mzee Kenyatta and ruled the country for 24 years.
