Gang Evicts Police Officers From City Homes

Police officers at a patrol base in Ngara were, on Friday, September 6, evicted from their premises by what appears to be hired goons.

Reports by the Daily Nation indicated that the goons went to the patrol base in the absence of some officers and embarked on demolishing the houses.

An officer told the publication that they had received a notice of vacation a week ago but did not have enough time to relocate.

He went ahead and stated that they should have been given more time before the demolition took place, describing the happenings as unfair.

In September 2018, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that free housing for junior officers would be abolished and instead, house allowances provided for them.

He added that officers would receive house allowances based on the regions they were deployed to work.

Officers working in Nairobi would receive the highest amount with police constables getting Ksh8,124.

Police officers residing in police line houses were required to vacate their houses within three months of receiving the first payment.

"House allowances for all ranks will be provided and I direct the National Treasury to initiate the termination of all leases of police estates within 90 days after the effective date of the new allowances."

"Officers will be required to enter into private tenancies with private property owners where they can live with other members of the general society," the president stated.
