Tempers flared during the grilling of Mombasa Governor, Ali Hassan Joho after Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga interrupted the governor who was at a loss off words in explaining outrageous spending within the county.
Joho was being grilled on Friday, September 6, by the Senate County Public Accounts and Investments Committee over misappropriation of about Ksh4 billion belonging to the county as reported by the Daily Nation.
"You (Omanga) have delved into old debts that were not paid... I have not finished explaining. Please be patient..." a calm Joho stated as Omanga interrupted aggressively in a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke.
"You have not answered my question!" Omanga lashed back as the chairman, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang, called the grilling to order.
Omanga is a Jubilee senator aligned with Deputy President William Ruto's Inua Mama faction, while Joho is an ardent supporter of another women group dubbed Team Embrace which supports President Uhuru Kenyatta.
During the grilling, Joho failed to explain the hiring of unqualified individuals by his administration.
The Senators further asked Joho to explain why employee compensation shot up by more than Ksh1 billion in the 2017/2018 financial year.
Joho defended himself stating that the rise was due to the higher number of early childhood education programmes and hiring of more health workers over additional hospitals constructed in Mombasa.
There was drama during the session when the county's treasury head, Ayub Buhiri, left to bring his academic and professional documents but failed to return.
Joho has been under constant attacks from DP Ruto's allies. On Friday, September 6, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali lashed back at him for utterances he made in the presence of President Uhuru. Ali had stated that Joho should be investigated over alleged graft revolving around Mombasa port.
