Court Makes Fresh Orders in Ksh72M Heist Suspects' Case

Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Monday, September 9, made new orders on the six suspects arrested in connection to the Ksh72 million heist.

According to reports by K24, Mutuku directed that the suspects in the bank heist be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi for treatment.

This is after the suspects' lawyer Cliff Ombeta reported to the court that the suspects were tortured while in police custody.

He narrated before Mutuku the experiences that his clients had gone through in police custody as they tried to extract information from them.

Ombeta told the court that the suspects in police custody were beaten and tortured by the detectives and that one of them was forced to make an admission that he was a police officer even though he wasn't.

People Daily reports that at the courts, the Chief Magistrate was shown how the second suspect, Duncan Kaveshi, was injured in the head and wrist after being tied with ropes and threatened by the police that they would unleash dogs on him.

Lawyer Ombeta also told the court that the detectives broke into the suspect's houses and destroyed the suspect's property as they searched.

“The detectives went into the suspects' houses and destroyed and broke the ceiling, the toilet and destroyed mattresses,” Ombeta told the court.

The magistrate ruled in Ombeta's favour stating that the allegations of torture were serious and the suspects deserved to be given attention.

The ruling on the prosecution’s application to detain the suspects for seven days is set to be made on Tuesday, September 10.

On Thursday morning,September 5, thieves posing as police officers made away with Ksh 72 million.

It is alleged that the impostors stole the money from G4S personnel and an ATM belonging to Standard Chartered Bank in Nairobi West.

According to Daily Nation, police officers stated that part of the money was stolen, while being transported in a van by G4S employees.

They were later arrested on Friday, September 6, and two of the suspects arrested with Ksh7 million turned out to be police officers.
