Sonko Breaks 2-Week Silence, Explains Absence From Office

Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, on Thursday, September 19, disclosed why he has remained silent after being summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission(EACC).

Through his social media pages, the governor stated that he was allowing the corruption body to conduct investigations without any interference.

"The anti-graft agencies must be allowed to do their work independently without interference or intimidation. This is also precisely why I have maintained total silence on the matter of EACC investigations," he cited.

The governor added that he would keep away from his City Hall office as a show of support to the investigative agencies.

"I have also made a personal decision to stay away from my City Hall office as a way to avoid being accused of interfering with official records which might be used as evidence against me," he divulged.

Further, he assured Nairobi residents that there was no power vacuum in the county, adding that service delivery was running as usual.

On Wednesday, September 4, EACC officials implicated the governor in a Ksh357 million garbage tender scandal.

Ksh20 million is reported to have been traced to the governor's accounts. The funds were reportedly a kickback from the firms that won the garbage tenders.

The money was allegedly paid through proxies in an attempt to avoid raising suspicion.

The governor was grilled by the agency in relation to corruption in the award of the tenders for 2017-18 and 2018-19 financial periods.
