SGR Bows to Public Pressure on Contrabands

The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) rescinded on a notice prohibiting all passengers from carrying cooked food into the stations and trains.

Reacting to the uproar that was sparked by the notice, KRC released a notice that the decision had been suspended on Saturday, October 5.

They noted that all commuters would be allowed to carry food into the termini as per the usual, going back on their earlier notice.

" Kenya Railways recently issued a public notice prohibiting foodstuff and beverages into the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) termini and stations. We do appreciate the feedback from the public.

"The measures taken are intended to enhance the safety and security of our customers. However, children below three years and customers with special needs will be accorded special consideration," the statement read.

The statement also noted that alcohol would not be allowed into the termini as earlier confirmed.

"We have on many occasions encountered incidences of irresponsible behaviour by some customers due to consumption of alcohol infringing on the privacy of passengers and exposing children to indecent behaviour," the statement continued.

On October 3, KRC advised passengers to purchase food and drinks from the cafeterias at their termini or onboard the trains.

Kenyans online reacted by dismissing the notice with some narrating that the directive was inconveniencing, especially for mothers and babies.

Pictures that went viral online showed commuters with alcohol in their cabins with reports claiming that they were rowdy and yelling at fellow passengers.

Some of them ended up vomiting in the cabins, therefore making other people on the train, including children uncomfortable.
