Uhuru Ignites Fire With Likoni Tragedy Message

President Uhuru Kenyatta finally spoke about Likoni Ferry tragedy, sending a condolence message to the family of the deceased.

However, the Head of State's message, 14 days after the tragedy occurred irked Kenyans who angrily lashed back at him.

On Saturday, October 12, Kenyatta, through State House spokesperson, Kanze Dena, regretted how the incident had unfolded.

"President Kenyatta sends condolence and comfort to the family of John Wambua who lost his wife Mariam Kighenda and daughter Amanda Mutheu in the Likoni ferry tragedy.

The President's message of condolence follows the completion of the search and retrieval of the ill-fated car and bodies of the departed, an exercise conducted by a multi-agency team drawn from our various entities," State House wrote on Twitter.

Kenyatta went on to assure Kenyans that the government would set up measures to prevent the occurrences of such an incident.

"Kenyatta regrets the unfortunate incident and assures all Kenyans that efforts are being made to ensure that a similar incident does not occur in future.

"For the family of Mr Wambua, the President assures that the Government will continue supporting them as they mourn their beloved kin," Kenyatta promised.

The Head of State also seized the moment to announce developments the government was undertaking towards the safety of passengers in the coastal region.

"Besides the ongoing revamp of ferry services, the President notes that the proposed Likoni Gate Bridge, the ongoing construction of the Dongo Kundu by-pass as well as the completion of the Samburu-Kinango-Kwale Road will help ease the pressure on sea crossing between Mombasa Island and the South Coast.

"The President, who has closely followed the search and retrieval exercise over the last 13 days, commends the multi-agency team for their relentless efforts in ensuring the long, tedious and risky undertaking was a success," Kenyatta opined.

Angry Kenyans bashed Kenyatta after he sent his condolence message 14 days after the tragedy. Many were irked with how quick he had responded to Silverstone plane crash on Friday, October 11, immediately the incident occurred, as compared to Likoni Ferry tragedy.

"The president should be ashamed of himself with his entire government, sending a message 13 days after the incident. He should stop shedding crocodile tears," Larry George responded.

"I literally had to laugh. This message is so obviously an afterthought reaction to Kenyans questioning the quick message to the plan mishap. This is so bland and so sad," Sandrah Njoki hit back.
