Kipchoge to Face 10 Other Athletes in New Contest

Kenyan marathoner Eliud Kipchoge was on Monday, October 14, nominated for a top athletics award days after he made history as the first man to run the 42km marathon in under two hours.

Kipchoge was nominated among ten male athletes in the running for the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year Award. He will be looking to retain the title he won in 2018.

The voting process for the 2019 World Athletes of the Year will culminate in the World Athletics Awards 2019 in Monaco on Saturday, November 23, organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Fellow compatriot Timothy Cheruiyot was also nominated. Cheruiyot won the 1500m title in World Championships that were held in Doha on top of the Diamond League 1500m title.

A three-way voting process determines the finalists. The IAAF Council and the IAAF Family will cast their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the IAAF's social media platforms.

Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with a 'like' on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on Twitter counting as a vote.

The IAAF Council’s vote will count for 50 percent of the result, while the IAAF Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25 percent of the final result.

Voting for the Male World Athlete of the Year closes on November 4. At the conclusion of the voting process, five men and five women finalists will be announced by the IAAF.

The male and female World Athletes of the Year will be announced live on stage at the World Athletics Awards 2019.

The female nominees will be announced on Tuesday, October 15.
