Truth About Matiang'i's Order on Arrest of Single Mothers

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i was on Friday, October 25, forced to act after a section of the media published reports attributing an unusual order purportedly issued by the Interior Ministry.

K24 TV in a Twitter update, claimed that the Matiang'i had ordered the arrest of all single mothers who could not explain the source of their wealth.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Interior Ministry Communications officer Wangui Muchiri noted that they had asked the media houses to pull down the tweets and anything else related to the information as none of it was factual.

"The tweet is a lie and we have asked them to pull it down which they have," Wangui affirmed.

She further revealed that that the rumours were initiated by someone with the intent of tarnishing the reputation of the no-nonsense CS.

The rumour appears to have first surfaced online on October 23, on a website by the name Kenya Updates after which a popular radio station on Friday picked it up and discussed on the morning show.

The article had also claimed that the CS had accused the single mothers of immorality and extorting money from the wealthy, apparently giving them a December 31, ultimatum to have disclosed the sources of their wealth.

Earlier on Friday, October 25, Matiang'i had to clarify on the fact that a fake gazette notice was circulating claiming that he had declared Monday, October 28 a Diwali holiday.

"Kindly ignore the gazette notice circulating on social media claiming Monday 28th October is a holiday. Monday remains a normal working day," the tweet read.
