Police Officers Who Brutalised JKUAT Student Identified

The identities of the police officers who were caught on camera severely beating a Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology (Jkuat) student have finally been released.

According to the Daily Nation, only three identities of the four officers have been released.

The three are George Wathania, Jonathan Kibet and Boniface Muthama. The publication further disclosed that the fourth is yet to be identified by the National Police Service Commission(NPSC).

A report by Citizen Digital indicated that the names were released by the NPSC Chairman Eliud Kinuthia in a press statement on Wednesday, November 13.

“The identification of the fourth police officer is delaying because, it’s a process, and the angle of the image on what is happening needs assurance and should be right,” said Kinuthia.

According to a police press statement on Tuesday, November 12, three of the officers had been interdicted to allow for further investigations.

"Further action and other internal disciplinary processes will follow the recommendations of the Internal Affairs Unit investigation," read an excerpt of the statement signed by Police Inspector-General Hillary Mutyambai.

Their interdiction came after Mutyambai sent out an official statement calling for the investigations to commence immediately.

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i had also addressed the issue on Monday, November 11, stating that was equally concerned by the conduct of the officers while quelling the protests by the students.

"I have observed the events at JKUAT today with profound concern. The use of force by police is clearly outlined in the National Police Standing Orders," read an excerpt from Interior CS's statement.
