Cornered Gunman Shoots Sporadically in Nairobi, Several Injured

Six people were rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital with gunshot injuries after a suspect being pursued by police opened fire to members of the public at Kayole junction on Kangundo road in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, December 17, 2019.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a reporter in the area confirmed the incident that happened at around 1 am, where the suspect opened fire to the public in a bid to escape arrest.

“The gunman had been pursued by police for some time and lacked other ways to escape. He chose to use the public victims as a way of avoiding arrest,” remarked the reporter.

According to a report by K24 Digital, the gunman was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle which he fired sporadically.

The criminal and his accomplice, who were travelling in a Toyota Allion, were later overpowered by the officers and gunned down after a shootout that lasted more than 10 minutes.

The report further explained that police officers had trailed the duo from Kiambu Road after they were tipped off.

The two were alleged to have been the masterminds of a number of robbery incidents along Kiambu Road and upon reaching Kayole Junction, they came face to face with the police.

Before being cornered by the police, the gunman is reported to have made 18 shots using his assault rifle.

In the shootout, one police officer suffered a fractured leg after he fell into a ditch as he tried to take cover.

Many of the injured were pedestrians and boda boda operators who were out working the graveyard shift.

The driver of the car suffered fatal gunshot injuries and died on his seat, while the gunman managed to crawl out of the bullet-riddled car into the middle of the road, firing aimlessly before he succumbed.
