Al Shabaab Suspects Torch Ksh38 Million Property

Gunmen, suspected to be members of Al Shabaab, raided a construction site in Mandera near the Kenya-Somalia border, burning down material estimated to be worth millions of shillings on Sunday, December 23, 2019.

The equipment included an excavator, flat roller machine, shift foot roller and a pressure pump.

Police sources and witnesses who spoke to The Standard said the attack was carried out at dawn on Sunday.

However, no injuries or casualties were reported from the latest attack on Kenya by the group.

Two guards who were manning the site were reported to have fled upon sighting the assailants.

Outgoing North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohamed Birik informed that investigations were underway.

“We are yet to know the motive of the incident and the equipment is valued at about Ksh38 million,” he told the media.

In August 2019, suspected members of the terrorist group struck Kheira Ali Village in Lafey Constituency, seriously injuring one person and destroying a telecommunications mast.

In the same month, gunmen attacked residents and a police camp in the area before fleeing.

Lafey region has been a soft target for the terrorists because of its close proximity to the Kenyan-Somali border.
