Why Uhuru Skipped Burial of Close Ally's Mother

President Uhuru Kenyatta's absence at the burial of Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua’s mother Martha Kirigo Gachagua on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, did not go unnoticed.

The president was expected to be present at the occasion, going by his heartfelt message of condolence, and his families close and good relation with the Gachagua's.

Uhuru's presence during the burial of the late Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua on March 6, 2017, where he went on to cater for the funeral expenses, also gave every indication that this was a family he held dear.

However, matters of state warranted his attention on the very day, with the Head of State hosting Guinea Bissau President-Elect Umaro Cissoko Embalo at State House Mombasa.

The leaders singled out the exchange of students and teachers, collaboration in technical training, trade, and security as some of the key areas of focus on bolstering cooperation between Kenya and Guinea Bissau.

President Kenyatta congratulated the President-Elect for his recent win and urged him to bring the people of Guinea Bissau together, saying unity is critical for national development.

Despite being absent, the Jubilee party leader was mentioned in high regard by the Mathira legislator.

Speaking at the funeral Rigathi assured all members present that his family has been loyal and close to the Kenyatta long before Uhuru joined active politics, adding that he was in contact with the president.

"I want to thank the president because he was there for us when the late Nyeri governor was buried and catered for all the expenses.

"He told us that he would send you (Deputy President William Ruto) to represent him and he went even further by sending money to cater for my mum's burial. Kindly pass our appreciation to him," he added.

Uhuru had eulogised the late Mama Kirigo as a kind and hardworking woman who raised an outstanding family.

“Mama Kirigo was a gracious and courageous woman who raised a successful family and mentored many in her community," the President's condolence message read.
