Govt Takes Action After Parents Kill Teacher Over Poor Results

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Thursday, January 9 withdrew all six teachers who were posted to Ndooni Primary School in Kitui County after Daisy Mbaluka, a teacher from the school was allegedly killed by parents due to their students' poor performance.

In a statement from TSC Director of Administrative Services Ibrahim Mumin seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the commission condemned the unfortunate act, claiming it would risk the future of the education sector.

“The commission regrets the unfortunate death of the teacher and takes this opportunity to condole with her family, relatives, friends, pupils and teachers of Ndooni Primary School.

“The commission wishes to assure them that it is working with the government agencies to establish the circumstances under which the teacher met her death,” read the statement.

The commission expressed concern that the school was left without government-employed teachers.

“The commission has with immediate effect withdrawn the six TSC teachers who have been working at the school.

“Further, the commission will not post any teacher to Ndooni Primary School until the security of the teachers is assured. The commission will not hesitate to take necessary measures including petitioning for the closure of institutions where the security of teachers is at risk,” added the statement.

Mbaluka was murdered in cold blood and her body burnt to ashes on Tuesday, January 7 while escorting her children to school, before reporting for her normal duties.

On Monday, January 6, Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion demanded a transfer for all teachers in the institution.

“That parents can kill a teacher should not be taken lightly. The heinous murder was totally uncalled for.

“I call upon the Kitui County commander, Ministry of Education and all stakeholders to swing into action. It is a curse that the residents have brought to their children. All teachers in Kenya must stand in solidarity to condemn the incident,” remarked Sossion.

Two suspects were arrested in connection to the incident and were charged before a Kitui court, where Resident Magistrate Felistus Mekesa ordered they be remanded for 21 days for more investigations.

The two suspects, Chris Kyalo and Wambua Mwangangi, were accused of being part of the mob that beat the Ndooni Primary School teacher.
