Lightning Strike Leaves 3 Pupils Dead, Scores Hospitalised

Residents of Kuresoi North Sub-county, Nakuru County are in agony after a lighting strike at Mkulima Primary School left three pupils dead at around 3 p.m on Thursday, January 16.

According to Daily Nation, at least 53 other students were admitted at Kuresoi Health Centre and Nakuru Level Five Hospital.

The Mkulima Primary School Headteacher Thomas Sisa informed that the grade four and five pupils were in their classes when the incident happened.

The learners had just rushed back to class following a heavy downpour.

Area Chief John Macharia Muhia who spoke to the publication stated that upon receiving word of the tragedy, he rushed to mobilise members of the community in efforts to rescue the pupils.

“I mobilised residents to rescue the pupils. Doctors are observing 45 who are still recovering from the shock,” Muhia told the daily.

In a plea to the national and county governments, he called for the installation of lightning arrestors in various learning centres to curb similar incidents in the future.

In a message to the affected families and victims, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui sent his condolences and availed three ambulances to ferry four victims who were in critical condition to Nakuru Level Five Hospital.

“The Department of Health has also dispatched a team of clinical officers and nurses to Kuresoi Health Centre, where 30 are admitted,” Kinyanjui was quoted by the publication.

Three of the pupils rushed to the level five hospital were later reported to bear no physical injuries and were declared stable.
